Ephesians 5:25 (ESV) says, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
This verse calls husbands to love their wives in the same way that Christ loved the church. The phrase “gave himself up for her” refers to the ultimate sacrifice Christ made by laying down His life for the church. This act of love was selfless, sacrificial, and aimed at the benefit of others. In the context of marriage, this means a husband is called to love his wife in a way that is selfless and sacrificial.
Here are various ways a man can “give himself up” for his wife:
1. Sacrificing Time: Prioritising his wife over other activities, work, or hobbies, and spending meaningful time with her to show love and care.
2. Supporting Her Dreams: Encouraging and supporting his wife’s goals and ambitions, even if it means personal sacrifice or adapting his own plans.
3. Emotional Availability: Being present emotionally, offering a listening ear, comfort, and empathy, especially during tough times.
4. Protecting and Defending: Standing up for his wife when needed, whether it be physically, emotionally, or spiritually, ensuring her well-being and security.
5. Spiritual Leadership: Leading the family in faith, praying for and with his wife, guiding them towards a closer relationship with God, as Christ leads the church.
6. Providing Stability: Ensuring financial, emotional, and relational stability, being a reliable and steady partner who creates a safe space for his wife.
7. Forgiving and Offering Grace: Just as Christ forgives us, a husband can give himself up by offering grace, patience, and forgiveness when mistakes are made.
Ultimately, to “give yourself up” for your wife is to love her in a way that prioritises her well-being, putting her needs above your own and continually choosing selfless love that reflects the love Christ has for the church.
